RMON2 Agent & Manager
The growth and popularization of the computer networks has caused the emergence of an elevated number of applications and protocols, making network administrators investigate effective management solutions that allow to reduce costs, provide high availability and maintain the quality of service for the users. For doing so, it is necessary to have knowledge about the network usage and behavior, what is possible only through its traffic monitoring. This project comprises the research and development of a tool, based on RMON2, to measure and characterize high-layer protocols.
It is organized in two parts: the monitoring agent and the management application. The monitoring agent has the function of providing statistics about the network usage. The information generated by the agent is in a textual format. Although it is easily comprehensible, the volume of these information grows very fast, turning its interpretation impossible. So, it becomes convenient using an application to process these textual information and provide the network manager with an easy to understand view of the traffic. To accomplish this task, a management application has been developed to generate graphics from the information obtained polling the agent. These graphics can be configured by the manager according to his/her needs.
